The PRISON of the PHYSICAL BODY
The Soul Should Not Remain a Prisoner

There is a fundamental Gnostic belief that the physical body is a prison replete with a great many limitations. In Gnosticism, as the soul descends into matter, it forgets its innate freedom and become bound to a body.

People believe that their minds are bound by time and space, and so they are. People's identities are stretched and expanded by learning, but they cannot go beyond their basic assumptions about reality. They are taught that the doors that open to allow a person to transcend bodily identity are locked and bolted.

Mysticism and spiritual travel allow the doors to be opened at least briefly, and to see how non-humans and non-material beings perceive the world. The universe is full of vast light and vast space. Bodies are like houses that one can visit but the spiritual traveler is a wanderer, and ultimately unsatisfied with a single dwelling and a single perspective.

Souls can fly through the skies like comets, and rush through mountains and valleys like winds. Much of the power of the soul is bound and gagged in a body. Spiritual maturity brings curiosity and the soul will not stay a prisoner. This in no way implies material bodies are bad. They are needed to interact with others and accomplish things in the physical world. But traveling spiritually means the door is opened to the non-material universe and people can choose to leave their house (physical body) and explore the wider world.
